For some people, nocturia happens because of better blood circulation. When you lie down, your heart can pump blood more easily, including to your kidneys. This makes your kidneys filter more blood, which leads to more urine and causes you to pee at night. Taking a mild loop diuretic (a medication that helps remove extra fluid) can help. If you take the diuretic in the afternoon, it will help your body get rid of the fluid during the day instead of at night.

There are a few different loop diuretics you can take, for example:

Furosemide
Bumetanide
Torsemide

These medications can have side effects, such as dehydration (when your body doesn’t have enough water), gout, low levels of salt or potassium in your blood, dizziness, and low blood pressure.

Gout is a type of arthritis that causes sudden, bad pain, redness, and swelling in the joints, most often in the big toe. It happens when there’s too much uric acid in the blood, which can form crystals in the joints. This can happen because your body produces too much uric acid or doesn't get rid of enough of it. Gout attacks can be triggered by things like eating certain foods, drinking alcohol, or dehydration.
