Training your bladder
Bladder training helps you take control of your bladder instead of letting it control you. If your nocturia is caused by an overactive bladder, your doctor might suggest trying bladder training techniques.
Bladder training means waiting a little longer before going to the bathroom when you feel the need to pee. At first, you try to hold it for 5 to 15 minutes. The next week, you try to wait a bit longer. You can use distractions, like deep breathing or keeping busy, to help.
With practice, your bladder can get used to holding more urine, which might help you wake up less at night to go to the bathroom. Your doctor can help you figure out the best way to do this.
This chapter contains general information about the treatment of nocturia. It is not a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment. Always consult your doctor or healthcare provider for guidance on your individual medical situation.
