Freezing sperm (cryopreservation)
Semen cryopreservation means freezing and saving a man’s semen (which has sperm in it) so it can be used later to help achieve pregnancy.
If you are about to have cancer treatment like chemotherapy or radiation, which can harm sperm, you can choose to freeze your sperm for future use.
- The semen is collected in a clean container.
- It’s frozen right away to keep the sperm alive and healthy.
- This freezing process slows down cell activity to protect the cells from aging or damage.
- When it’s time to use the sperm, the sample is gently warmed in water at body temperature (37°C) for about 10 minutes.
- Not all frozen sperm survive the thawing process, but many can still be used successfully in fertility treatments.
This chapter contains general information about freezing sperm. It is not a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment. Always consult your doctor or healthcare provider for guidance on your individual medical situation.
