Surgery for VUR usually fixes the problems in the urinary system that cause urine to flow the wrong way. This often means repairing or changing the tubes (ureters) that carry urine from the bladder to the kidneys. The type of surgery your child needs depends on how serious the condition is and the chance of kidney damage.
The surgery is done under general anaesthesia, which means your child will be given medicine to make them sleep. While asleep, they won’t feel anything and won’t remember the operation.
After the surgery, your child will go to a recovery area where the doctors and nurses will watch them closely. The healthcare team will give you instructions on how to care for the wound, manage any pain, and if there are any foods or activities to avoid. Following these instructions is important to help your child heal well.
This chapter contains general information about duplex congenital malformations of the urinary tract. It is not a substitute for professional medical advice or treatment. Always consult your doctor or healthcare provider for guidance on your individual medical situation.
